The university of the twenty-first century is unquestionably one of the pillars upon which the information society and a competitive and sustainable economy must be built. At this time of sweeping social, economic and technological change, the university is called upon to be the driving force for development in the generation of knowledge and its transfer to society, and this is only possible with a model of campus that is an amalgamation of the forces of other institutions and social agents as well. The UAM+CSIC Campus of International Excellence (UAM+CSIC CIE) is the result of the joining of forces between Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the Scientific Research Council to build a campus for higher education, research and innovation, with international projection.
The project, which also includes the Campus's IMDEA institutes, four healthcare research institutes, two national research centres in prevalent illnesses, municipal governments and business organisations in the area, as well as a number of companies, is built on a three-pronged platform: a clear commitment to teaching, consolidated research talent and prestige, of unquestionable international significance in some areas, and a firm undertaking with our social, cultural and economic environment. In this context, in 2009-2014 development of the strategic plan began, with a major transformation of the university in terms of aggregation with research centres and institutes, specialisation and internationalisation that will be further enhanced in the next action plan covering the 2015-2018 period.
